This panel, curated by the Financial Times together with GeSI, will focus on discussing practical examples of how digital solutions including AI are being deployed to help meet sustainability goals in biodiversity, education, the transformation of cities and in finance.
- How can digital solutions help involve citizens in saving biodiversity? What are some good examples of monitoring the environment digitally and where do the main challenges lie?
- How can tech and school leaders work together to leverage digital solutions, including AI and gaming, to make education more widely available and attractive to modern students to breach the educational gap? In what ways are new technologies already bringing education to wider communities as well as ensuring that the curriculums and delivery methods are up to date? What are some challenges of using digital technologies in education?
- How is digital data being used in urban policy making, environmental management and disaster risk reduction? What are some new uses of technology in cities and what is being done to overcome the challenges, including cyber crime?
- In what ways is digitisation widening access to financial services? How do we make sure that smart solutions benefit everyone to drive social and economic inclusion?
The panel will discuss the outcomes and challenges of deploying digital solutions in these four areas and focus on an action plan to use these technologies for maximum impact. It will also explore if and how these digital technologies help meet sustainability goals.

Cities are increasingly harnessing the power digitalization to boost efficiency of their infrastructures and effectiveness of an increasing amount of complex and interconnected services in a broad range of domains such as health care, transportation, power and utilities, and residential services.
Digital transformation and the development and roll out of smarter and more resilient digital infrastructures brings about new and unforeseen opportunities to systematize and manage urban systems and power grids. This transformation also opens up communities to additional risks including cybersecurity and impacts on privacy that could fundamentally affect the existence of smart cities and cause disruptions leading to potential losses and breakdown of social and economic systems.
This session will discuss the challenges and opportunities of digitalization of infrastructures in cities. It will delve into the role of policymakers, urban planners and other key stakeholders in developing sustainable pathways of design, operation and governance for the smart city. The exchange will address issues related to integration of infrastructures, interoperability and data management and it will provide a platform for exchange on solutions that can help cities to benefit from increasingly digital infrastructures as well as to tackle efficiently the growing vulnerabilities minimizing these new arising risks.
- Why are cities increasingly relying on digital technologies to manage their complex infrastructures and services and what are the main challenges that they face?
- What are the costs and benefits of the ongoing expansion of smart cities?
- What are the cutting edge solutions available for cities to manage and limit digital threats and to ensure an effective data governance?
